Stoop if you can to the dark sea forgetting... Do you know whose translation this is? I have it in a book of poetry and it doesn't credit the translator. I've set it to music and want to write both the Seferis foundation and the translator to ask for permission to use the poem. It's such a beautiful, expressive poem and this translation is much more musical than the others I've read. Please let me know the name of the translator if you know it. Thanks! Michael.
Thank you for your comment, Michael. The translation is from Edmund Keeley and Philip Sherrard,from the book "George Seferis Complete poems" - Anvil Press Poetry 1995. The first word is "bend", i just checked so ill correct it also here.
Michael - I've also set the "Stoop if you can..." translation to music, piano and choir, and I've tried to find the translator with no luck. The book is Modern European Poetry and the section on Greek Poetry does say Edited and Translated by Kimon Friar so it's possible that he translated all of the poems in that section. I have several other translations and the "Stoop..." translation is by far the most musical. When I first read it I started hearing music instantly and sat at the piano and it just poured out. Very inspiring poem!
